Laurie’s Christmas Story

Wise men

This is a Christmas story that I recently found among some papers written by my late husband Laurie given at a Christmas event which I will share with you.

I begin this year’s Christmas message by telling you a story you have heard many times, a story as old as the Saviour Himself. I had trouble where to start but after studying both Mathew and Luke gospels decided I would have my own version.

My story starts with a star no one has seen before. People knew it must herald some great event. Wise men riding on camels came from the east following the star looking for this event to happen.

There was a couple Joseph and Mary. Mary was betrothed to Joseph. One day an angel of the Lord came to Mary and said “The Lord has chosen you to be the mother of the Saviour that he is sending to bring peace to the world and you will call him Jesus’.

At that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken through out the Roman Empire. Every person had it go to the town in which they were born to  register. Joseph was the son of David had to register in the town of Bethlehem. They travelled a long distance and just after their arrival Mary gave birth to her son wrapping him in cloth and laid him in a manger. There was no room for them at the inn.

Some shepherds in the field caring for their flocks were frightened by an angel who said to them “I am here with good news for you this day in David’s Town your Saviour was born Christ the Lord.” The wise men came forth to present their gifts and sounds of joy and exultation was every where.

For those of us who believe this story will never die, encouraging us to say “Glory to God in the highest heaven and peace on earth to all those with whom he is pleased “.This is my story of the birth of Jesus Christ our Saviour which we celebrate on the 25thof December.

I conclude with A Christmas meditation.

A Christmas Meditation by Helen Steiner Rice
Give us through the coming year
Quietness of Mind.
Teach us to be patient
Always to be kind,
Give us reassurance when every thing goes wrong,
So our faith remains unfaltering
Our hope and courage strong
Show us that in Quietness
We can feel your presence near,
Filling us with joy and peace
Through out the coming year.
